Custom Knife Sheaths: What to Consider Before Ordering
A quality knife deserves a quality sheath. Whether you're carrying a bushcraft blade, a hunting knife, or a custom-forged piece, a handcrafted leather sheath protects your investment and makes it safer to carry in the field.
At Old Country Leather, we create custom-fit knife sheaths tailored to your specific blade and carry preferences. Here's what you need to know before placing your order.
Why Custom Matters
Off-the-shelf sheaths rarely fit perfectly and are generally cheap. A loose sheath risks losing your knife, while one that's too tight can damage the blade or make it difficult to draw. Our Custom sheaths are molded to your knife's exact dimensions, ensuring secure retention and smooth access.
What We Need From You For A Quote
To craft a sheath that fits your knife perfectly, we'll need:
- Blade length and width: Measured from tip to guard or handle.
- Overall thickness: Including the spine.
- Handle style: Does it need a snap for the guard, bolster, or does it have a unique shape?
- Photos: reference photos or sketches of what you after help.
- Carry preference: Belt loop, dangler, scout carry, or in some cases scabbard style.
- Freedom: Do you want to give us total creative freedom? Not a problem.
- Budget matters: A budget can help us really narrow down what we can do for you, handstitched verse machine, or custom dye job verse undyed leather. This is generally the biggest factor that helps us quickly determine what we can pull off for you.
Leather and Construction
We use full-grain vegetable-tanned leather for majority of our sheaths. (unless otherwise mentioned) This premium material molds to your knife over time, provides excellent edge protection, and develops a rich patina with use. Sheaths are typically hand-stitched with waxed thread for durability in demanding conditions. In some cases they are machine stitched depending on the situation and needs of the customer.
Carry Options
How you carry matters. Belt loops work for everyday carry and general use, while dangler-style attachments sit lower on the hip for comfort during extended wear. Scout carry positions the knife horizontally across the small of your back, and we can accommodate other custom configurations based on your needs.
Lead Time and Process
Because each sheath is made to order, we require detailed measurements and photos before we can provide a quote. Once approved, typical lead time is 4-8 weeks depending on current orders. Contact us first before adding to cart so we can discuss your specific requirements.
